When you get to the top of the mountain

Pull the next one up.
Aide le suivant à gravir.
Then there'll be two of you

Roped together at the waist
Encordés à la taille
Tired and proud, knowing the mountain,
Fatigués et fiers, connaissant la montagne
Knowing the human force it took
Conscients de la force qu'il aura fallut
To bring both of you there.
Pour arriver là où vous êtes.
And when the second one has finished
Et quand la seconde aura fini
Taking in the view,
D'admirer la vue,
Satisfied by the heat and perspiration under the wool,
Contente d'avoir chaud et de transpirer sous la laine,
Let her pull the next one up;
Qu'elle aide le suivant,
Man or woman, climber of mountains.
Homme ou femme, alpiniste.
Pull the next hand over
Aide le suivant à franchir
The last jagged rock
Le dernier escarpement
To become three.
Pour que vous soyez trois.
Two showing what they've already seen.
Deux qui montreront ce qu'ils on vu
And one knowing now the well-being with being
Et un troisième qui ressentira le bien-être qui vient d'en avoir
Finished with one mountain,
Fini d'une montagne
With being able to look out a long way
De pouvoir enfin regarder au loin
Toward other mountains.
Vers d'autres montagnes.
Feeling a temptation to claim victory
Et être tenté de crier victoire
As if mountains were human toys to own.
Comme si les montagnes étaient des jouets qu'on peut posséder.
When you ask how high is this mountain
Si tu t'obstines à vouloir
With a compulsion to know
Connaître la hauteur de la montagne
Where you stand in relationship to other peaks,
Et à savoir où tu en es par rapport aux autres sommets,
Look down to wherefrom you came up
Regarde d'où tu viens
And see the rope that's tied to your waist
Et regarde la corde attachée à ta taille,
Tied to the next man's waist,
Attachée à la taille du suivant,
Tied to the next woman's waist,
Attachée à la taille de la suivante,
Tied to the first man's waist,
Attachée à la taille du premier,
To first woman's waist ... and pull the rope!
De la première& et tire sur la corde !
Never mind the flags you see flapping on conquered pinnacles.
Ne pense pas aux drapeaux que tu vois flotter sur les sommets conquis.
Don't waste time scratching inscriptions into the monolith.
Ne perds pas ton temps à graver des mots dans la roche.
You are the stone itself.
Tu es fait de pierre.
And each man, each woman up the mountain,
Et chaque homme, chaque femme là-haut,
Each breath exhaled at the peak,
Chaque soupir d'un arrivant au sommet,
Each glad-I-made-it ... here's-my-hand,
Chaque enfin-j'y-suis& prends-ma-main,
Each heartbeat wrapped around the hot skin of the sun-bright sky,
Chaque battement de cSur qui s'enlace dans la peau brûlante du ciel ensoleillé,
Each noise panted or cracked with laughter,
Chaque souffle ou éclat de rire,
Each embrace, each cloud that holds everyone
Chaque embrassade, chaque nuage qui sème un moment de doute
in momentary doubt ...

All these are inscriptions of a human force that can
Sont tant de manifestations d'une force humaine capable de conquérir
Conquer conquering hand over hand pulling the rope
En tirant la corde une main après l'autre
Next man up, next woman up.
Au suivant, à la suivante.
Sharing a place, sharing a vision.
Partageant une place, une vision.
Room enough for all on all the mountain peaks.
Il y a de la place pour tous au sommet des montagnes.
Force enough for all
Assez de force pour tous
To hold all the hanging bodies
Pour soutenir ces êtres accrochés,
Dangling in the deep recesses of the mountain's belly
Se balançant dans les recoins des entrailles de la montagne
Steady ... until they have the courage ...
En suspens& jusqu'à ce qu'ils aient le courage&
Until they know the courage ...

Until they understand

That the only courage there is is
